Itโs been said a million times, but weโre just going to bring it up again: in 1913, on the eve of the outbreak of World War I, Argentina was one of the 10 wealthiest countries in the world in terms of per-capita income, with Switzerland and the United States as peers and Southern European countries like Italy and Spain in the rearview mirror.
Yes, you read that right. Argentina was richer than its former colonial overlord, and Italians came to Buenos Aires by the boatload, hoping to find better lives than back home in their recently-unified country.
