Each Sunday, take two minutes to catch key stories and opportunities shaping Latin America.
Welcome back to the Domingo Brief! This week, we’re looking at Lula’s South American summit in Brasilia, big money moves out of Nu Colombia, and a whole lot more.
🇦🇷🇧🇷🇲🇽 Global pop sensation Taylor Swift is bringing her legendary Eras Tour to Latin America with the announcement this week of shows in the second half of 2023. She will be making stops in Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo—and tickets will surely sell out immediately.
Latinometrics: This is Swift’s first tour since the Reputation Stadium Tour five years ago, and is the first time she’s touring her four latest albums: Lover (2019), folklore (2020), evermore (2020), and Midnights (2022). The Eras Tour could well net the 33-year old superstar up to $1.5B in revenue, or 3 times what Bad Bunny netted last year.
🇧🇷 Brazilian President Lula da Silva convened 12 South American leaders in Brasilia, the first continent-wide summit since 2016. Heads of state from every country in South America attended, with the exception of Peru, where embattled President Dina Boluarte sent Prime Minister Alberto Otárola in her stead.
Latinometrics: This is a tough time politically for many South American leaders, but the summit is still a good effort to reestablish regional efforts to combat transnational problems. It also heralds the return to regional leadership by Brazil, who under Lula’s predecessor actively shied away from significant engagement with neighbors. Most controversial was the attendance of Venezuelan autocrat Nicolás Maduro, until just last year a pariah amidst his conservative neighbors in Brazil and Colombia.
What was on the agenda?
