🇨🇱 Chile’s economic development agency CORFO has announced plans by Chinese multinational firm BYD to build a $290M lithium processing factory in the northern Antofagasta region of Chile. As a qualified lithium producer in the country, the firm gets preferential prices for the mineral.
Latinometrics: BYD is the world’s largest manufacturer of electric vehicles, while Chile is the world’s 2nd-largest lithium producer. This factory, which will generate 500 jobs and begin producing 50K tons of lithium phosphate per year in 2025, is just the latest step in a fruitful partnership that has already produced Chile’s electric bus system.
