Long before lithium dominated headlines and multinationals made billion-dollar investments in renewables, oil was the key energy commodity of Latin America.

Crude petroleum in particular became over the course of the 20th century one of the region’s most profitable – if volatile – exports. Today it forms an essential part of many regional economies, particularly in Andean countries such as Colombia and Ecuador.
