Latinometrics in the Media
Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico City’s mayor, shared (sort of) our research about Latin American cities becoming safer. We got a taste of the number of bots and insults she receives daily on Twitter (a lot).
As happy as we were that she shared our work, we think she missed some context when claiming that her “security strategy is working.”
First, the chart that her team made with our research claims that Mexico City is one of the “safest cities in the world” — we certainly wouldn’t go that far nor make that claim.
Second, the CDMX homicide rate in 2021, as our chart shows, is still a bit higher than in 2011-2015, but she only showed the latest year’s data point.
We also made it to the front page of Reddit! Make sure to check out the comment of the week we got from there at the bottom.
The World Economic Forum made a blog post and video about our Peru blueberries and Mexico raspberries stories.
