Trivia of the Week
Just about 37% of voters were correct in answering last week’s question: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil’s 2nd-largest city, served as the capital to the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil, and the Algarves. This began in 1815, with the Portuguese royal family fleeing to Brazil to escape invading Napoleonic armies, and ended within less than a decade as Brazil declared its independence from Portugal.
While 2nd-place answer Mexico City did serve as the capital to the Second Mexican Empire, which was a client state of France and led by an Austrian emperor, technically the empire was contained to Mexican territory. In contrast, the aforementioned empire spanned not only Brazil and Portugal, but also ruled over Lusophone (Portuguese-speaking) colonies in Africa and Asia too.

🇦🇷 Argentina successfully reached a last-minute deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to avoid falling into default. The deal will see the IMF disburse $7.5M of its $45B loan program in order to help Argentina avoid falling into arrears.
Latinometrics: With a drought estimated to have wiped out roughly $18B worth of agricultural exports this year, Argentina’s in a tight spot. The country needs to repay the IMF, but also cover its dwindling foreign reserves. Adding to the uncertainty is the approaching elections to be held in just over two months.
