Trivia of the Week
Exactly half of you were correct in guessing Brazil as the only Latin American country to border the European Union. While European overseas territories are sprinkled all over the Caribbean, the only land border between Latin America and the EU is the Brazilian border with French Guiana, an overseas department of France. This would mean that in the case of the ratification of the long-awaited EU-Mercosur deal, the small 730km border would become the sole land doorway between the two blocs.
Each week, tune back in for the answer to the previous week’s trivia question. No cheating!
🇦🇷 Argentina will receive over $1B from the World Bank and Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), funds which are earmarked for development and energy projects. The World Bank alone will be giving roughly $900M in financing for health care, clean energy, and climate resilient infrastructure, while the IDB is providing roughly $400M in credit to the country (and neighboring Uruguay) for investment in the Salto Grande Hydroelectric Complex.
Latinometrics: Argentina is (in)famously $44B in debt to the International Monetary Fund and dealing with an inflation rate of over 114%. These fresh funds from the multilateral development banks serve as needed capital for a cash-strapped country seeking to still invest in its people.
