Haiti was first colonized by the Spanish, but eventually brought into the French Empire as the lucrative sugar colony of Saint-Domingue. It obtained its independence at the turn of the 19th century.

🇦🇷 Argentina has reported a primary financial surplus as it deals with an unstable domestic economy and a sliding currency. The country has seen three consecutive months of surplus, one of the first times this has happened since 2008. Naturally, President Javier Milei was quick to sing the praises of his administration’s “chainsaw” approach to public expenditures.
Latinometrics: As the latest protests have shown, Milei continues to face widespread opposition from much of his country—however, his favorability has held steady for now, indicating Argentines are still willing to endure economic pains if they believe there’s a chance it can lead to a fixing of the country’s structural issues.
