Yes, over 70% of you were right: Peru is indeed the country which has had 5 presidents in as many years, with current President Dina Boluarte only taking office last December following an attempted self-coup by her predecessor, Pedro Castillo. Since the mid-to-late 2010s, Peru, despite strong economic stability, has faced a worsening political crisis marked by deeply unpopular presidents and even less popular congresspeople. The situation isn’t likely to be ameliorated by this week’s release of controversial authoritarian ex-president Alberto Fujimori.

🇦🇷 Argentinean fintech Rebill has launched a new cross-border payments gateway with the support of Y Combinator. The startup is specifically using the over $3.6M it’s secured from investors to target small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across 10 countries. With an emphasis on transparency regarding fees and exchange rates, Rebill seeks to pitch itself as the Stripe of Latin America.
🇧🇷 Brazil is joining the OPEC+ grouping of global oil-exporting countries. The country, which in recent years has become Latin America’s major success story in oil, may well join oil production cuts which were announced by the organization’s major players, Russia and Saudi Arabia, though this remains to be seen.
Latinometrics: Unlike the traditional OPEC (Organization of Petroleum-Exporting States), which is a formal organization designed to control oil prices, OPEC+ sees other major oil exporters such as Canada, Mexico, and Russia have their say and shape the agenda somewhat. Currently, founding member Venezuela is the only member country in the actual OPEC cartel.
