Last week, a whopping 69% of you were correct in saying that Haiti was the first Latin American country to achieve independence. The region’s only francophone country achieved independence in 1804 after over a decade of fighting against the French Empire. To date, it remains the only country in world history to be founded through a successful slave rebellion.

🇦🇷 Argentina will be admitted in August as the latest member country of the New Development Bank (NDB), a Shanghai-based international development bank created by the BRICS grouping (Brazil, Russia, India, China, & South Africa) of countries. The move, which has the intrinsic support of both Brazil and the NDB board of directors, will permit Argentina to obtain direct financing as it seeks to shore up its dwindling foreign reserves.
Latinometrics: The New Development Bank is jointly owned by each of the 5 BRICS countries and was established in 2015 with an initial authorized capital of $100B earmarked for infrastructure and sustainable development projects. Argentina is joining other recent additions to the bank’s membership in recent years including neighboring Uruguay as well as major economies such as Egypt, Bangladesh, and the United Arab Emirates.
